Oakley Surf Shop Challenge 2011 @ Ala Moana Bowls

This years Oakley Surf Shop Challenge was held at Ala Moana Bowls. The waves were in the 4-6ft range with maybe some ocassional bigger set coming in. Surfing for the Blue Hawaii Surf team was John Parks, EJ Mitsui, and Devin and Jordan Brueggemann. Both EJ and Devin had just come back from a 3 week trip to Cali for the NSSA Nationals. Our team was a bit challenged considering we were one of the only teams out of the 10 teams who didn't have a pro or pros in some cases. Our mens buyer/shop manager John went up against 2 Vans Triple Crown event winners in Pancho Sullivan and Joel Centeio in his heat! He was stoked though to be out there surfing on his own shaped board as well as good surf with some of the best surfers on the planet! After the first round our boys were making plans to bail out for the day figuring we had no chance at making the final 5 team cut. When they announced that we had made the cut smiles and laughter were on everyones faces. At the end of the day our team ended up in 5th place overall! Thanks to Brad and Jason from Oakley for putting on an awesome event! Maybe next year John, EJ, or Devin will turn pro and then we can finally have one on our side!

Devin Brueggemann wins NSSA season opener

Devin surfed in the first NSSA contest of the 2011-2012 season this past weekend. He surfed in two divisions (open boys and explorer menehune). Devin ended up first in the explorer menehune and second in the open boys. I think that was a great way to start the NSSA season. Congrats Devin!

If you didn't know Devin surfed in the HSA State Championships at Ala Moana Bowls this past week. He surfed in the Menehune shortboard division which is the 11 and under. The conditions at Bowls couldn't have been any better... 2 -3 feet with occasional 4 footer rolling through. He advanced through four rounds and won a couple of heats in the process before the semi final. In semi final Devin ended up posting his highest score of the event, a 9.5! He was stoke with his score, but he was even happier with the announcement that he had won the semi. Then it was time for the final. The final was stacked with the best surfers from a cross the state and some great waves to be surfed. So the stage was set. All the kids surfed really well and it was just a matter of who was going to get the best wave. Devin had some great medium size waves but not the one he needed in the end. He just missed a solid four foot wave that could have possibly been a very high scoring wave. So he settle for the next wave that didn't open up for him in the closing seconds. After surfing four rounds and a semi final, Devin ended up placing "3rd" in the HSA State Championships final!!!

We are super stoked for him and his accomplishments this season.

Looks like he will be surfing in both nationals now. Which is Surfing America Championships at lowers and NSSA at Huntington.

Hurley Surf Team @ Blue Hawaii Surf Pearlridge

It's only been 4 1/2 weeks since we've opened our doors at Pearlridge but we've been fortunate enough to have some of the most talented artist, skateboarders, and surfers come through. Yesterday (Saturday Dec.18th) was no different from the past couple of weeks. Seth and Leilani brought the Hurley surf team through to meet and greet with our fam and customers. Considering that it is the holidays and the last weekend before Christmas we were honored and privileged that the guys took time out to make this happen. The boys signed autographed posters and gave out FREE Hurley x Blue Hawaii truckers. Mahalos to Seth, Leilani, Joel, and the Hurley surf team for stopping by and helping us to create another memorable event!

This is a first time ever that REEF has brought with them the REEF girls who have helped REEF become a household name brand when it comes to slippers. Yes REEF makes ridiculously comfortable slippers as advertised but they also have the most ridiculously best ads ever! Tyson along with the staff over at REEF came in to town along with Rob Machado and the REEF models for the REEF Hawaiian Pro as well as the crowning of Miss REEF at Haleiwa on the North Shore. After being on the island for less than 24 hours the REEF fam made their way over to our newly opened Blue Hawaii Surf Pearlridge location. When I say newly opened I mean this was the first full day of us opening our doors. What a way to celebrate opening a brand new shop than to have the REEF girls and the REEF surf team to help you welcome your first customers through the door! Along with Tyson was Kevin Flannigan, PJ O'Connell, Amy, Chloe, and Julie. A good time was had by all and we really appreciate the support that REEF has given to us here at Blue Hawaii Surf. Blue Hawaii Surf Ohana @ Freedom Surf Contest

2 days in Waikiki from dawn to dusk that's how it went down. Lot's of sunscreen, drinks, and grinds....oh yeah and surf! There seemed to be alot going on in Waikiki like the Annual Filipino Parade which was quite entertaining. Uuummmm lumpia! We had Brian Keaulana giving Malika Dudley and Keahi Tucker from KGMB 9 a quick lesson on tandem surfing right in front of our setup. Very entertaining! Saw Buttons Kaluhiokalani and his keiki out in the surf doing the tandem thing as well as Duane DeSoto and his grom. As for the surf contest itself it was pretty good. Our boys Tory Brown and Scott Saito made it to the longboard semi's where they had to battle eachother as well as the other 4 rippers. E.J. Mitsui once again made it to the finals and all but won the whole shabang. E.J. ended up finishing 4th overall. E.J.'s on a tear right now finding himself in the finals of the past couple of surf meets. He's about due to take home the win here soon! Surfing in his very first contest was Lil' Marlon aka "Braddah Limu". "Braddah Limu" walked away with trophy and a smile. He's hooked and looking forwards to his next event! Goodtimes as you all can see. Thanks to everybody who came out and talked story and hung out for the weekend. Let's do it again soon. Aloha!

Blue Hawaii Surf/Skate Day #1

This was the first half of our 1st Blue Hawaii Surf/Skate Day. Location (secret spot) Kalaeloa very heavily localized, I wouldn't recomend coming out if you don't know any locals! (hahahahaha) We started off our day warming up @ Barbs before the heavy skate sesh that was about to ensue over @ Kapolei Skatepark. Goodtimes as always! It's cold in Cali!

During our recent trip to Cali for the ASR we found a little time to squeeze in a surf. Actually a few hours before our flight back to Hawaii to be exact. We woke in the morning only to find that it was cloudy and cold. When we arrived at River Jetties in Newport we saw that everyone was in fullsuits and Parks and I were the only kooks with boardshorts. Whatevs right. Jim Shubin came down to meet up with us and hooked us up with a board to ride. The water ended up not being that bad (yeah right)! We managed to catch a few close outs while Dyson was "beach meat" on the shore! Goodtimes.

Kalaeloa Military Surfing Championships

This past Saturday Quiksilver and HIC put on their annual Military Surfing Championships. The turnout was crazy and it's a much anticipated event that HIC and Quik hold every year. The atmosphere is great for the family and the beach was totally packed. This year Blue Hawaii had to of our groms enter in the event. Devin and Nicole Brueggerman went out and had the time of their lives. As kids it's more important to just go out and enjoy and empty line up more than it is to win the event. In Nicoles case she made it to the finals in the womens shortboard division as well as the 12 and under division. Congrats Nicole! As for Devin, it was all about being able to surf with only a few other groms out. Dev was more stoked on sandsliding the shore break in between heats!

A couple of years ago I would say sometime in May of 2006 there was this pretty cool artshow at the Pegge Hopper Gallery in Chinatown. I'd heard from Jef Hartsel fellow skateboarder and surf enthusiast about the show. Hartsel was one of the artist participating in the show as well. The show was put together by Rona Awber Bennett and her husband Jeremy. Other artist involved with this project were Jason Teraoka, Eric Walden, Timothy Ojile, Rich Richardson, Jeremy and Rona Awber Bennett.
